Clinical Laboratory Science (Medical Technology)

Faculty Advisor:  Ms. Jeanne Calvert

USF’s Clinical Laboratory Science/Medical Technology program isn’t for everyone.  In no way is this curriculum appropriate for those who can’t otherwise make it in other pre-professional health majors.  This is an extremely rigorous four-year healthcare curriculum. Your career would be focused on performing laboratory tests, usually in hospitals. Jobs in this field are abundant. Most hospitals have a severe shortage of qualified workers. Jobs often go unfilled at hospitals because not enough qualified applicants can be found.

Students take general education and core biology curriculum at USF for three years. The fourth year is an intensive clinical rotation at a regional healthcare facility receiving direct, on-site, hands-on experience in a medical laboratory. Because all USF coursework must be completed in three years (including all general education courses) students must begin intensive scheduling their freshman year if they expect to finish in four years.  They must stay on task each semester with careful scheduling, and maintain a strong GPA.

The clinical training portion earns 32 credit hours from various areas: Clinical Microbiology, Clinical Hematology, Blood Bank, Serology, Urinalysis, Parasitology, Coagulation, Immunology, Histology, Education and Management, Orientation and Lab Practice, Topics in Medical Technology, Clinical Chemistry, and Special Chemistry.

Professionals use technical instrumentation in hospitals, clinics, research laboratories and private industry. Graduates often find employment within the healthcare facility where they conduct their clinical rotation.

Beyond the USF general education requirements, students must take:

  • Principles of Biology I & II
  • Principles of Chem. I & II
  • Human Anatomy/Physiology I & II
  • Microbiology
  • Genetics
  • Immunology
  • Biology Seminar
  • Organic Chemistry I
  • Biochemistry
  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Biotechnology Lab
  • Physical Survey
  • Principles of Management
  • Statistics
  • Clinical training, 32 credit hours: MEDT 450, MEDT 451, MEDT 452, MEDT 453, MEDT 454, MEDT 455, MEDT 456, MEDT 457, MEDT 458, MEDT 459, MEDT 460, MEDT 461, MEDT 462, MEDT 464, MEDT 465

Clinical Laboratory Science/Medical Technology majors must maintain a GPA of at least 2.0. Courses may be repeated only once. Students must apply to and be accepted into the chosen hospital’s clinical portion of the program. Students not accepted are welcome to continue their studies completing a B.S. in biology, then re-applying the following year for the clinical rotation, if desired.
