Formula for Life

The mission of the Formula for Life organization is to improve the nutrition of poor and sick infants of Haiti. While recognizing the benefits of breastfeeding, Formula for Life also recognizes that this is not always possible, especially in Haiti, where some children are orphaned or their mothers are unable to supply them with necessary nourishment without formula augmentation. The values of Formula for Life are shaped by God’s message in Matthew 25:40, which states, “As you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.”

Formula for Life was founded in 2007 by Biology major Cortney Shepard, now a medical student at Midwestern University – Chicago School of Osteopathic Medicine. When you join Formula for Life, you will be a part of a University of Saint Francis committee that works to advise and coordinate volunteer-driven events that raise funds for the purchase and delivery of infant formula to the needy of Haiti. These events have raised more than $150,000 in money and supplies.

In addition to addressing nutritional needs, another primary goal is to provide for the residential needs of the orphans of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Orphanage in northern Haiti. Construction of a self-sufficient orphanage on 15 acres of land that will be a home for 80 orphans began in December 2013. The main fundraising event for this project is a spring 5K run/walk that attracts both competitive runners and casual walkers.
